| Weather Update & Flood Warning - January 21, 2012 |
[Jan. 21st, 2012|08:58 am] |
[From an emergency radio broadcast early Saturday morning, January 21st, 2012] The National Weather Service in Heritage has issued a FLASH FLOOD WARNING for debris flows due to melting snow in Cleveland County. Weather reports have indicated that rising temperatures are likely to cause rapid melting of snow and ice.
Roadways are clearing up due to warmer temperatures all day Friday and tireless efforts of road crews and emergency personnel. Large amounts of water and slush have begun to accumulate on major roadways. Residents are urged to use caution while driving, and it is not advised that residents travel after 8PM PST, as dropping temperatures threaten to turn slushy roads into ice.
At 5:45AM PST officials reported flash flooding across the warned area. A snow melt debris flow has closed Highway 89 in Northern Cleveland County, which runs between Heritage and Parsons, Oregon. Other areas along Highway 89 south of Heritage and near the Cleveland Valley State Park area may experience similar debris flows which could rapidly cross the highways.
Please report any further flooding to the National Weather Service office in Parsons at [phone number]
The ice on Heritage Lake has been particularly thin this year, and officials have also reported flood warnings to all lakefront homes in the Lakewood Neighborhood, as well as any local businesses that operate lakeside. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ATTEMPT TO GO OUT ON THE ICE.
While almost all Heritage and Parsons businesses and neighborhoods have electricity back up and running, residents in the Longfellow Neighborhood are still without power due downed power lines. A rather large tree at the corner of Redwood and Elm Streets lost a large branch, which fell into the power lines. The Heritage Lake Lodge is currently at occupancy. There are still open emergency shelters available in the Heritage Community Center in Heritage and St. John Gaulbert's Church in Parsons.

| Thin Ice Warning - Monday, January 16th |
[Jan. 16th, 2012|10:14 pm] |
Thin Ice Warning Issued By County Sheriff's Office.
Ice on Heritage Lake has been slow forming this year due to recent warmer temperatures. As a result there are many weak spots where thin ice is present. Residents are asked to stay on dry land for the time being to avoid any collapse, injury, drowning or possible hypothermia.
"If ice thickness is unknown, stay on the shore and stay dry. Keep your children from venturing out on the ice as well for their own safety. It's as simple as that." Sheriff Emily Livingston Advised.
The Sheriff advised residents to brush up on ice safety precautions, and teach children about the dangers of ice on ponds, lakes and rivers. Among those precautions: Look for clear ice. Clear ice is generally stronger than ice with air bubbles in it or with snow on it. Also, watch for pressure ridges or ice heaves. These can be dangerous due to thin ice and open water and may be an obstruction.
The Sheriff also issued a reminder that a state of emergency is in effect for the duration of the storm. All non-essential employees that are found out on the roads will be issued citations. Only emergency and state-approved crews are allowed on the road. Residents are asked to stay indoors if possible and, if necessary, to call emergency services if they are needed for assistance. |

| One Reported Dead in Lassa Fever Outbreak |
[Oct. 9th, 2011|07:43 pm] |
[FROM A NATIONAL NEWS BROADCAST on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9TH, 2011] Reports have confirmed one man dead as a result of the outbreak of Lassa Fever that quarantined a small town in northeastern Oregon. The community of Heritage, Oregon, located about 45 miles from Portland, has been under CDC-declared quarantine since Thursday, officials say.
Information about the initial outbreak, including the first few reported cases, has been kept tightly under wraps, but representatives from our local affiliate KATU 2 out of Portland has uncovered evidence that Carlos Sickerton, 42, of Heritage, was also the outbreak's first casualty. Hospital authorities kept the patient's fate out of the media as long as possible, but CDC Public Affairs Officer Maria Alvarez released an official press release Sunday morning confirming that Carlos Sickerton died early Thursday morning from complications directly resulting from Lassa Fever. Family members of Sickerton have begun the process of making memorial preparations with the local Chekov Family Funeral Home.
The CDC reminds residents that Lassa Fever is treatable if caught early. Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to report to Heritage Hospital. A temporary medical facility has been constructed in the gymnasium of the Heritage Community Center. Heritage Hospital authorities urges anyone with non-fever-related medical concerns to report there first before going to the hospital to prevent overcrowding. |

| Quarantine In Effect. |
[Oct. 6th, 2011|07:59 pm] |
CDC Quarantine notifications to residents of Heritage:
Reported in the paper, online, over the radio and television:
A quarantine is in place in Heritage, Oregon, where at least one case of Lassa Fever has been detected.
Carlos Sickerton, resident of Heritage, OR is believed to have contracted the illness while vacationing in West Africa. The Centers for Disease Control have asked anyone who may have come into contact with police officer Carlos Sickerton in the last seven - ten days to report to Heritage hospital for examination. CDC officials arrived this afternoon to begin working with officials at the Heritage Hospital to advise employees, recent patients and local residents of their responsibility to report for and comply with all quarantine procedures and restrictions for the time being.
Symptoms of Lassa fever include fever, retrosternal pain (pain behind the chest wall), sore throat, back pain, cough, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, facial swelling, proteinuria (protein in the urine) and mucosal bleeding. Neurological symptoms have also been described including hearing loss, tremors and encephalitis.
"Because the symptoms of Lassa fever are so varied and nonspecific, clinical diagnosis is often difficult," Maria Alvarez, CDC public affairs officer, said. "That is why it is important for anyone exhibiting any of the symptoms listed should report to the hospital right away for observation."
